For me this is the time of year I love MOST!

...and I don't mean the crowded stores, and the spending of cash on stuff. (Though they do seem to go hand in hand) Here's what I love about the Christmas season:
COLD Weather, it's perfect! Kinda bites the end of your nose.
SNOW, till the week after Christmas then it can go away till next year.
LIGHTS, whether its the downtown store fronts (still my favorite) or homes decorated for the season.
FAMILY and FRIENDS, they both go together for Lisa and I since my family is so far away.(Most live in New England, yea.....Patriots fans)
FOOD, who doesn't love food!
GIFTS, and mostly giving. It's fun to find the perfect gift for the person on your lift. Yea it takes some time, but isn't that the spirit of Christmas? Let it take some time and spend it reflecting on the people who are on your list.
KIDS, wide eyed!!!! (don't you wish it could be that way for a lifetime?)
SANTA CLAUS, I'm still bummed about the day Mom, Dad and I HAD a TALK!! I would have figured out the stork and kids thing....BUT Santa?!!!!

.....you know when you blab on and on for 5 hours a day 5 days a week, a person might run out of things of consequence to talk about. Think about it.

Quick note to friends of my wife, Lisa......get off my ass about her birthday. I have given you people all the ideas I have, there aren't any more. Plus, you've deminished any birthday impact I might have gotten cause I've given you my best ideas. Her birthday is next Saturday the 22nd, live with it! I will be!!!!

How many people you know who are sick? Seems like everbody in the 'burgh has got a cold these days! Including me, second one this fall already!

Don't look now but here come the Pens! Great WIN in Detroit and beating Philly (shootout or NOT) always makes me smile.

Steelers are making me nervous. Confidence got rocked when they lost to Indy last weekend. They had that one and let it slip away with BAD turnovers....so how they play this weekend is anyone's guess. This I do know, we'll have to beat the Ravens in their yard to win the North, and I HATE the Ravens (Original Browns/Art Modell). Hate the color Purple, starting to hate crab cakes....this is bad!

Halloween is October 31st NOT whenever it's convenient for a municipality. It's for KIDS! NOT commerce!

It's a WIERD Time in my life.....

....cause I never thought I'd reach a time in my life where I could find a Vice President attractive. Now before you go 'he's a perv'...I not talking about Joe Biden, I'm talking about Sarah Palin! So hear me out. Sarah Palin is HOT!!! I'm not the first to notice cause my co-host on the morning show really brought it to my attention. I'm not the kind of person who thinks of people on a scale of whether I would sleep with them or not. That's not what I'm talking about. She's HOT!!! She's good looking, she's attractive. She COULD be the Vice president! Aren't they always OLD people? Here's the real problem, I'm old enough to think she's hot! (and NOT be a perv) Also I never had the same thoughts about Spiro Agnew,or George H.W. Bush, two reasons 1) I'm hetero, and 2) they are MUCH older than me. OK, at least I've come to grips with it. Sarah Palin is HOT!!! Does that make me old?

COLD! Happens when the temperatures drop and again in the spring when temperatures rise. Every year, and I'm am such a freakin' baby. I whine, I need to be pampered, I need to be waited on, and I can't seem to help myself. I am a BIG BABY!! OK I'm done!

Red Sox, as usual, are killing me! They can't seem to put away another team unless they are in the World Series. Needless to say, my emotions go up and down with every game. Thank God it's NOT the Pirates cause, then the drama would be right under my nose, and I'd have to be at every game, get press passes, tickets for friends, etc, etc.

Political Process according to me...

I started this yesterday, the day after the GREAT debate on Tuesday. First of all, these are NOT debates, they are showcases for the candidates to preach their doctrine. Each performance is fine tuned, including the rules of said debate. Each one of these 'showcases' have been negotiated by the campaigns in a way which will ONLY show their candidates in the best possible light. Again, not a debate! In fact, not even a sharing of ideas, just bluster, rhetoric, and stump campaign speeches all wrapped into a 90 minute boring TV show. Here are some rules which will NEVER be adopted but should be in each one of the debates.

1) Each Candidate MUST answer the question proposed. Each response to a question needs to stay on point. The moderator, should have the ability to stop a candidate's response if they stray off point.

2) Candidates may not summarize their opponent's record or position. They MUST state only their own position (or party's position) on any given topic.

3) Failure to adhere to 1 or 2 would result on their opponent getting 'bonus' time to highlight their position.

4) There should time set aside when the two debaters actually have 'face to face' time to discuss their differences, similarities and possible compromises to issues.

These are just a few broad stroke changes, I'm sure you can think of more and i'd love to hear them from you.

It's really time we asked our candidates for plans, solutions, and explanations of their solutions. Right now, all I hear is consultant speak from both of the major party representatives. Make sure you appeal to the masses on the issues and please don't try to explain cause you'll lose the voters attention. This type of campaigning and government execution is what's got us in this mess, and we don't need to be leaving our kids a BIGGER mess than they already will have to clean up. Your thoughts?

Moving a little slower this morning, gotta hate those Sunday night Monday night, Steeler games. Certainly want to punch the alarm when it goes off at 2:30!!! Yikes!!!! Couple of thoughts on last night's Steeler win in Jacksonville. First, it's really difficult to win on the road in the NFL, just ask Buffalo (losers to Arizona, Cincinnati (losers to Dallas) or Seattle (losers to the Giants), so the Steeler win last night on the road in J-ville really puts them in drivers seat for the time being in the AFC North. Second point, last night's game based on the injuries the Steelers have had in the first few weeks of the season, really lends to a 'character win'. They played without running backs Willie Parker (knee)Rashard Mendenhall (shoulder), guard Kendall Simmons (Achilles' tendon) defensive linemen Casey Hampton (groin) and Brett Keisel (calf). And because Big Ben had been sacked 16times in the first four games, the Jaguars expected to have a big day defensively, however, he threw for 237 yards and two scores in the first half and directed scoring drives of 71, 59, 82 and 66 yards. The Steelers out gained Jacksonville 300 yards to 49 yards in the first half and had 17 more first downs. Nate Washington caught six passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. Hines Ward had seven receptions for 90 yards and a score. Mewelde Moore, filling in for Parker, ran 17 times for 99 yards. Players 'stepping up' to use an overused sports term. Last point on the Steeler win in Jacksonville, something MUST be said about the systems in place from the coaching staff. When a team suffers as many key injuries as have occurred this year, and the team continues to win, in spite of changing personnel, it says alot about the coaches, their systems and the organization.

With the 'bye week here, let's enjoy the win, get some players healed and get ready for a very tough rest of the season.

Debates, Playoffs and BIG Birthdays

So this weekend marks the beginning of our BIG 250th Birthday Celebration!! Really, did you guys get an invitation or did I just misplace mine.

How afraid do you think the Republicans will be when VP Nominee Sarah Palin takes to the stage tomorrow night v Joe Biden? Frankly, if she bombs, it's the Republican consultant's fault. McCain picks her, puts her on the world stage at the Republican convention, then locks her away for almost a month with political consultant's who watered down her message and confused the S*** out of her! You can see it in her eyes, whenever, she's asked a question. Oh and she's learned from the BEST (McCain) on how to never really address the question which was asked. Love politics.

I gotta get going cause game one of the baseball playoffs is this afternoon. There's ONLY ONE OCTOBER!!! Here's my early Christmas wish for this years World Series....Cubs v. Red Sox! Fenway and Wrigley! If you build it they will come!!!!!!!

Here's a couple of things about me, so we're on the level. Married (second time)wife's name is Lisa, Two kids (from the first marriage) son and a daughter. Lisa and I own a one yr old Cairn Terrier, his name is Cory, and he came to us thanks to the Western Pa. Humane Society. I am a huge sports nut, and golf is my passion. So if you're looking for a game with a mid handicapper (8), bring it on! I am a registered Republican and live in Baldwin Borough, (Pittsburgh) Pa.

I had the pleasure of hosting the National Aviary's Feathered Jewels Gala. What an event!! Here's a photo of an owl which landed on the table beside ours, yea, some of the birds actually took flight....

BIG bird, and it's was flying inches above our heads. BUT, here's what was of shock to me, as they placed my bald head on 20 foot screens, my wife snapped a photo...urghhhhhh thanks to all at the National Aviary, they have big plans in the future, so make some plans this fall to stop in and check them out...www.aviary.org

Did you have a chance to catch the debates Friday night...thoughts.... anyone.....anyone.....Bueller? Here's one man's opinion, I cannot believe anyone with any objectivity whatsoever thought John McCain WON that debate. I turn on the TV Saturday, and the spinners have McCain WINNING!!! Now I don't trust the media for anything (cause you know what I'm one of the them and if you listen to the show, I never let the facts get in the way of a GOOD story)cause they're in the business to get ratings, and to get ratings you have to sensationalize. Obama won hands down! Can't wait for Thursday, Biden v. Palin, what do ya think?

I happen to LOVE Tony Kornheiser, I know I'm in the minority, but I don't really care! He's intelligent, funny and loves the game. Mike Torico is also GREAT, Jaws NOT so much! Oh, Steelers will roll tonight! AFC North lead FIRST, then AFC dominance!!!!!

These Pen are unbelievable, and though many want to play Dallas for the home ice advantage, I would much prefer the Red Wings. 1) Cause I think they are a better team than Dallas, and 2) They call Detroit 'hockeytown' and it would be fun see the Pens roll all over 'hockeytown', and 3) if Dallas wins, I feel trouble coming cause I work at a radio station called 'Star' and if we play the Dallas Stars....hmmm, I think you get the drift.

Booked a fishing trip up on Lake Erie this weekend with my Dad and brother, totally hyped on the whole thing. I'm not really a fisherman, but for a day I can buy in. It's a charter with a real boat captain and crew for the day. Captain says we're gonna catch alot of 'walleye'. Can't wait!

Took my first of a few golf weekends this past weekends. Sometimes the games just too hard to play (or my way of making an excuse as to why I didn't win the tournament). In short, sometime I just SUCK, and though my partner and I were in first place on Saturday, by the time the sun went down on Sunday we were no longer.

Usually on the weekends I play golf..and since I get up so early during the week, it's easy for me to be up at dawn and on my way to the golf course when the sun comes up. I use the term 'sun' loosely as we do live in Pittsburgh, so what I'm refering to might actually happen twice a month :) My point here is early morning might be my favorite time of the day. I often think what early settlers must have throught when they first came through here. They lived on the East coast, and had little if any experience with mountains. I can't help but think when I drive up Rt 60, or south to the Yaugh, and see some of the spectacular sights surrounding the mountains and rivers, it MUST have taken their breath away. I know it does me many weekend mornings as the mist rises from the valleys, and the first glimpse of the sun hits. What a time of day!!!

This is for my golfing buddies. Yes, I'm baiting them, BRING SOME CASH THIS WEEKEND, CAUSE MY GAME IS ON!!!!

I know you guys who live off Rt. 28 have done something to someone, somewhere to deserve the mistreatment PennDot (or whoever)gives you. You had to have done something in a past life to deserve the traffic treatment you get on a daily basis. BUT NOW the pain goes crosstown to Rt. 88, and from what I can gather, if you live near or have to travel Rt. 88, you might want to relocate to Wheeling for the foreseeable future. I've looked around to see if I can understand where you can go on Rt. 88, but, everytime I get so confused, I'm ready to drive Rt. 51 everyday, cause at least that way I won't get ......errr LOST! Can't we do something about this?

haven't really felt like blogging as I've felt like **** since I got back from the D.R. Though I don't think it's anything I picked up on the trip other than partying my ass off, and running my physical being into the ground. Anyway, most of the people I know are sick or a family member is sick so I'm thinking I need to take my turn and shut up. Couple of things which have run through my head in the past few days...

How you feeling about this years presidential election? It's my opinion, NONE of the candidates are any good. They don't seem like they are people whom you'd want to be in a relationship. I'm not talking romantic either. I'm talking any kind of relationship. All seem to be trying to be people whom we can elect rather than the real person they might be. I'm not even going to go the route of what do any of them stand for cause I'm thinking they will say anything to get elected, therefore they stand for nothing. Should be interesting, if not frightful.

My favorite time of the year is fast approaching. Baseball season. Yea, I know we live in the land of 15 years worth of losing, but if that's how you feel about the Bucco's, you're missing the point. Hope springs eternal every spring....and with the passing of winter you get another chance at winning. (oh and I grew up a Red Sox fan so take all I say knowing my family suffered through 80 years of losing before the latest 2 World Series wins) Someday the Pirates will win, stop trying to guess when and enjoy the fresh air, beer and peanuts at PNC Park...I'll see yunz down there!

Can't wait to play golf and not freeze my ** off!

Vacation Thoughts

Nothing like a good long vacation to get your head clear. If you've listened to the show long you know there are a couple of things I love to do. They are 1) travel and 2) golf. Spent the week in the Dominican Republic, ah how beautiful! Here a few photos of the experience..

Not my favorite time of the year! Not a BIG fan of Valentine's Day or February for that matter. For some reason this is the time of the year, when I get stuck! Weather's too crappy to do anything outside, inside projects either haven't started or are not quite completed. I realize how much I ate during the holidays and how hard I'll have to work to get in shape by spring. Football is over, baseball hasn't started yet...It's like my life is in neutral. Thank God it's only a few weeks!!

Saturday night, Bonnie Diver (Metro Traffic/works with Ami Angel and friend of the Star Morning Show) invited me to COOK, that's right COOK for her 3rd Annual Recipe of Hope. Bonnie, a cancer survivor, has done some great work with her charity Hair Peace, (which assists local cancer patients in buying wigs). If you know anything about me you know I don't cook! So this was a real challenge for me. I contacted my Mom for her famous (in our house anyway) Mac N' Cheese. Viola, INSTANT home run, I walked away from Saturday night's benefit with nothing but CLEAN casserole dishes... Here's some BAD cameraphone photos of the event. Sunday night, Kate, Pete, Lerse and I were amoung the 15 hundred people who renewed their vows at the Carnagie History Museum in Oakland. The event should be logged into the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest of it's kind EVER. Mayor Luke administered the vows, What a Venue!!!!

OK so this Re-Nu Your Vows thing we're doing at the Carnegie is HUGE!! Lerse has bought in hugely. She gets home last night.......from a bridal shop....with a $400.00 dress.....I mistakenly saw the price tag and went down hill emotionally from there. Luv her to death....BUT.....$400.00 for a ONE TIME WEAR! Oh, she'll need shoes, a purse, wrap and some other unforseen apparatus to add to the total. Not that I mind, but I'm trying to get my head right!

Oh and she kicked my ass at bowling again Saturday night....and she was rooting for the Giants in the SuperBowl (knowing I GREW up in BOSTON).... spent more $$ at the Meadows Sunday....she's drinking ALL my Vitamin Water,....

(oh and she has let me take 6 days in March to head to the Carribean to play golf with my buds)

Lerse (my wife) is the 'social director' in our house and I must say she's been most kind to me so far this year. Keeping social occations to a minimal, see when you are amoung people all week, you need the weekend(sometimes)to....

.....errrrr.....decompress. Looks like this MIGHT be one of the decompression weekends. YEA!!!!!!

Really, don't care who wins the Super***** (you know the name is copywritten so that's why you hear stuff like 'The BIG Game') All my family is in New England so I guess if the Pats win the 'fam' will be happy.
Gonna try and start heading back to the movie theatre in the next few weeks. Only movie I've seen recently is 'No Country for Old Men'

Just so my position is CLEAR...I really could care less what happens to Britney Spears. You Get What You Get in this life, if you squander it....TOUGH! Don't feel sorry, don't empathize, can't relate, really don't care. It's like she's that little kid who says 'watch me, watch me' then when you watch them, they do NOTHING! You Get What You Get!

Who didn't know Cyril Wecht was a wanker? Before I moved to the 'Burgh you'd see him on the TV talk show curcuit, first thought which came to my mind .....Blowhard Boob, as my friend Kate says 'you traded bodies for lab time'. We've had him on the air once or twice, he never answers a question, promotes his own agenda, and is NOT very interesting. Hey Cyril, grab a seat on the bench with J. Edgar Hoover (perv), Spiro Agnew (clown), Gary Hart (promiscious), and any other ego driven elected official, be gone with you. You embarrass us!

Today is OUR Wedding Anniversary

13 years....same person, cool person, great person. Funny how your mind works, it's days like these when I spend a few moments in reflection. Obviously, today I'm thinking about Lerse. It's also easy to take one day out of the year and say nice things about your spouse, have a date night, play a little Yahtzee, and when the sun comes up the next day, you move on to other things. Maybe it's gimmicky, to do or say anything on your anniversary, but, I'm going to do it anyway. Hell if you can't say it on your anniversary, when can you say it. Met her 17 years ago, dated/lived with her for 3 years, and finally she asked me on a Tuesday if I'd like to marry her that Saturday. I had nothing going on but a tee-time (golf term) so I said yes. Off we go on a 2 hour gambling cruise in Jacksonville Florida, exchanging our vows on the bridge with the service conducted by the captain of the ship. Not exactly the most romantic wedding you've ever attended, nor I. That in itself is the point about our marriage, we do what WE want, when WE want, and ONLY do things WE have decided together to do. I could not have found a better friend, cause not a day goes by when I know she's got MY best interests in mind and me hers. My mother said it best a few years ago, when she asked me how I was doing. When I said I was fine, she responded 'JR, you have been fine since the day you met Lisa'. Living, sharing, crying, laughing, all of life's emotions shared with a person who is in lock step with you. Never thought it would happen to a schmo like me.

FYI, I'm a dumbass...locked my keys in the car yesterday, errrr, while it was running. Great use of gasoline! So the next time you hear me lowering the boom on some unsuspecting caller, think this......JR is a dumbass too!

Why in the world would they close I-79 near Southpointe for 10 minute increments at 10:30 on a weekday morning. If you were stuck in it, you could rationalize 'road rage'. I have two (2) things I REALLY suck at...the first is pool, you know billiards. Good time with beer, snacks, and well, pool tables, until I grab a cue (is that what it's called?) and all hell breaks loose. I might as well empty my pockets of money, ( of course I have to bet!!!) cause I just ain't good at it. The second is bowling, so what does my wife do? She signs us up in a bowling league. So now, I don't just suck at bowling in silence, I suck in front of a group of friends. To make matters worse, she's MUCH better than me. Kicks my butt every other weekend! BUT, BUT BUT, something magical might have happened.
I have had this bowling ball under my desk for the past 5 years, and I just pulled it out last weekend. It might be the luck of the Star Morning Show bowling ball (notice it actually says 'Star Morning Show' right on the ball) cause I buried my wife. Outscored her in EVERY game. I think I MIGHT have a 'competitive issue', after all it's ONLY one week. But for now I'm sitting here with a pencil getting ready to cross bowling off my suck list!!

We're #1!!!! Rarely will you hear me pop off about the ratings, cause, basically I hate the hi's and lows. Having said that, we got our Fall '07 ratings back and the Star Morning Show is the number one rated morning show in Pittsburgh amoung women between the ages of 25 and 54. (insert your thunderous applause here) I'm so sore patting myself on the back!!! Seriously, I bring it up ONLY to say 'thanks' for your support thoughout the year. ( I also would like to thank Hanna Montana, Christmas music, Kate, Bubba and everyone else I have probably forgotten throughout the year).

Watched SOME of the Congressional hearings on Performance Enhancing Drugs in Baseball yesterday. I must say if I was an owner of a major league baseball team, I would find a better representative than Bud Selig.
The man, in short, is an absolute boob. Aside from looking like he just rolled out of bed (every day), he failed to answer any one question with a definitive answer. The only saving grace I see in the man as commisioner, is he's a scapegoat for everything wrong in the sport. I'm not sure you could find another person on this planet THAT dumb.

Most of the time I feel like rambling, just throwing out my thoughts on various subjects. So here we go!

Don't know if I brought it up before, but Lisa (my wife, pictured with some Steeler) recently adopted a new dog from the Western Pa. Humane Society. Gretchen, from the shelter comes in every Wednesday to do a feature on the Star Morning Show and she and I have been talking about a pet for some time.
Well, to make a long story short, THIS guy came up for adoption
His name is Cory, he's a seven month old Cairn Terrier, and totally cool!!!! For the record, Lisa (I call her Lerse, so you better get used to that name) have never adopted an animal from a shelter. All I can say is the experience was wonderful, streamlined, courteous, and without incident. You can information about adopting a pet on this website (click adopt a pet for info)

Other thoughts rolling around;

Don't look now but our Pittsburgh Penguins are tied for FIRST place!!!!

I am pulling for the Patriots to go undefeated (hey I grew up in Boston).

Burghers know nothing about winter, I've been here for 10 years, we don't get winter weather in Western Pa. Go north 100 miles and say 'Hi' to real winter.

I am NOT really an American Idol fan, I just sound like one on the radio ;)

The Star Morning Show is in the process of bringing some new and fun things to the Star Website, look for better graphics, and content coming soon. It's been a while since I've been on this blog so let me bring you up to speed in my world.

Yes Bubba has left the show, he's on the NEW (Old)B-94. I wish him the best of luck in the future. Many of you confused our radio act with reality, in thinking that Bubba and I didn't get along. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Not only are we friends but he and I genuinely enjoy each others company (easy comrade). I will admit it was fun having a good argument with him

Got to go to 'opening night' of the Lion King, it plays in town for the next 5 weeks. Great time. Here's a group of us dining at the Grille on Seventh.
